Surface Topography Optimisation for the Automotive industry

Objetivo

Objectives and content
Autobody quality is a critical access factor for
automotive manufacturers to remain competitive with nonEU producers. Weight minimisation, complex aerodynamic
and pedestrian-friendly shapes, structural integrity,
dent resistance, cosmetic quality and paint finish are
significant issues being addressed with valuable
financial assistance from the EU. This is resulting in
autobody panels, which are extremely difficult to
economically manufacture, rewriting in loss of
competitiveness with N. America & the Far East and high
costs to the consumer. Recent studies have shown that
the Surface Topography of new High Strength Steel
autobody materials is of critical importance to forming
(friction), assembly (surface effects) and painting
performance (orange peel). A traditional perception that
pressing, assembly and painting performances are mutually
exclusive is now strongly questioned and the current
surface topography specifications have been shown to be
ineffective. A new functional performance related
specification will yield major advantages to EU autobody
material producers and automotive manufacturers and hence
is of critical importance.
This project will generate this objective functional
specification through strong integration of industrial
and academic research with existing EU funded projects.
This will build on existing achievements and will ensure
full compatibility between all information generated by
these EU programmes. This work-programme addresses the
holistic autobody manufacturing system by focusing on all
critical aspects using an advanced & innovative research
programme and hence this programme is necessarily
substantial. The primary activities are as follows:
The generation of objective quality systems to measure
autobody quality as perceived by the customer. This will
allow the determination of the optimal surface topography
for functional performance and provides vital links with
other projects to ensure compatibility of results. These
include Forming Of new Metallic Materials (FOMM), tooling
effects (Low Cost Press Tooling) and process effects
(Blankholder Techniques). The measurement system will be
interfaced with TESTSURF and MEDIATE to quantify
functional performance. This close interfacing will
maximise synergetic benefits and maximise the
effectiveness of the EU funding;
Generation of novel 3D surface topography
characterisation parameters which directly correlate with
true pressing, assembly and painting performance which
will form the basis of the topography specification;
Generation of an innovative objective surface
topography specification which can be economically
produced by EU manufacturers to provide competitive
advantage over non-EU manufacturers; The integrated
academic and industrial research programmes will maximise
the learning of all partners from the six EU states. The
strong exploitation group to ensure rapid, effective
implementation and significant improvement in EU selfsufficiency. This robust work-programme detailing the
four Sub-Divisions, each with a fully described set of
tasks and their associated deliverables has been refined
with 15 months of intensive planning. Realistic
implementation levels will provide a return of
approximately 168.6MECU over 5 years for a contribution
of less than 3.6MECU from the EU Commission.
