Electrical disintegration of rock

Objectives and content
The costs of the size reduction of the ore fragments by
its compressive and impactive mechanical disintegration,
applied in the mineral processing as a non-specific
technique for liberation of minerals, are almost equally
divided between expenditures, resulting from the
consumption of energy and from maintenance of the
disintegrating equipment. Development of the specific
and efficient mineral liberation process, reduction of
the energy consumption for liberation of minerals from
rock matrices and development of the low cost mineral
liberation equipment by substituting the conventional
compressive mechanical crushing for the specifically
targeted explosive fragmentation of ores, induced by
application of the pulsating electrical fields to the
ore, named electrical disintegration (ED), is the prime
target of the proposed project. The other objectives are:
devising the pulse generator for the commercial ED
technology, operating in the mining environment,
devising the low capital and maintenance cost
electrical disintegrator with the working chambers,
interfacing the pulse generator, and constructed from
dielectric materials and replaceable metallic electrodes,
increasing the efficiency of mineral liberation by
inducing the selective failure of the rock matrices along
the intergranular boundaries of mineral constituents of
ore aggregates and excluding generation of composite
particles and slurries,
reduction of the environmental impact of the rock
disintegration technology by simplification of equipment,
excluding generation of dust and substantially decreasing
the industrial noise.
The consortium, which wishes to carry out this project
consists of:
Department of Earth Resources Engineering of Royal
School of Mines, Imperial College of Science, Technology
and Medicine (ICSTM) as a developer of the ED technology
and the project co-ordinator. Its responsibilities
include the co-ordination of the project, developing of
the scaling up technological and constructional
parameters and testing the pilot plant,
Physique & Industrie (P&I), a high tech Electrical
Engineering company, will be responsible for development
and design of the high frequency pulse generator for ED
technology and construction of the industrial scale pulse
generator for the pilot plant with testing its
performance in the pilot plant,
The FLS Minerals, a major manufacturer of the rock
disintegrating and mineral processing equipment as a
future manufacturer of the ED equipment. Its
responsibilities in the time of duration of the project
will be development, design and construction of the
electrical disintegrating chamber for the pilot plant and
participation in the pilot plant tests. After completion
of the project FLSM will be responsible for the further
development, manufacturing and marketing of the ED
equipment.
