Contact lenses with aspheric asymetric surfaces

Objectif



The CLAAS project consists of the development of complementary technologies for designing, manufacturing, controlling and prescribing contact lenses with aspheric asymmetric surfaces. The fundamental reason for these efforts is that the external shape and the optical defects of the eye are in most cases irregular, and have a strong interindividual variability. The main objective of the project is to improve contact lens acceptance and performance through a better, even customised adaptation to irregular ocular features. Improvements in submicron cutting technology and in three-dimensional design software will provide a flexible way to produce a wide range of complex contact lenses of high quality. In order to verify this quality, optical interferometric techniques will be adapted to the inspection of such irregular optics. After these developments, non-rotating contact lenses for correcting astigmatism will be experimented and optimised. The project will also assess the performance of highly customised contact lenses, adapted to individual eye shapes thanks to corneal shape measurements. The interest of designing contact lenses after measurements of ocular aberrations will also be explored. Finally, possible spin-offs in assisted prescription of conventional contact lenses and in high resolution retinal imaging will be investigated.

This innovative project will be coordinated by a major manufacturer of ophthalmic optics. The consortium also includes two SMEs, two universities, and a National research organisation. This partnership offers a wide range of expertise, and high technical and functional complementarity. The strategic challenges of the CLAAS project are to strengthen the position of European manufacturers in the world-wide market of speciality contact lenses (e.g. Ienses with extended range of characteristics), and to maintain the European submicron manufacturing technology at the highest performance level. Thanks to the creation of new market areas in both Europe and North-America, significant social and economic impacts are expected from aspheric asymmetric lenses and lathe machines. This project will also bring to the end-user a more comfortable and better tolerated generation of contact lenses. Customised lens shapes will extend the number of people who can benefit from contact lens correction, which is particularly well adapted to modern life styles BE97-4608.
