High-speed 3d-camera for electronic board inspection and dental

Objetivo

Objectives and content In the electronics industry there is an explicit need for automated 100% inline inspection of critical processing steps in the production of electronic boards and in particular the soldering process, such that reliable electronic interconnections can be produced. The features of interest are three-dimensional. For large- scale production 3D inspection systems exist, but for small-scale production these systems are too expensive. In order to obtain an economical solution for numerous smaller scale productions, both in large and small enterprises, an inexpensive, robust, highly accurate and high speed is needed. In the dental industry there is also a demand for a 3D data acquisition tool, i.e. an intra-oral 3D camera to measure the shape of living human teeth, in order to manufacture dental inlays and crowns by CAD/CAM cheaper, faster and more accurate. The objective of this project is to develop such a 3D- camera (3DCam) to the needs of these applications. This 3DCam will capture the distance to 3D objects at the speed of conventional 2D cameras. The 3DCam, based on a novel fringe projection scheme, utilises novel ferro-electric liquid crystal projection technology. The set-up leads to a potential speed of 25 3D-images/sec (or 10 million 3D pixels/second), high accuracy, and to a light-weighed, non-expensive system which is widely applicable in the two application areas described above but also in many other important areas, such as in the automobile industry and the production and assembly of fine mechanical parts. The benefits of using 3D inspection in the electronics industry are a significant reduction of scrap and rework and a higher overall quality and reliability, of which is estimated that potential annual cost savings on the European level will be more than 100 MECU/yr. The consortium has strong complementary expertise and comprises Philips as an industrial end-user/manufacturer of electronic components and electronics assemblies, Smart Optics and Opto-Control as supplier of optical inspection components and systems for the electronic industry, Dens as a developer/supplier for dental hard- and software, Fabia, C-Cam, and Fisba as component developers/suppliers of critical parts of the 3D camera, the University of Erlangen as inventor and basic know-how supplier of the 3D camera and the National Microelectronics Research Centre (Ireland) as specialist in DSP software development.
