Electrical actuator with brushless / sensorless permanent magnet synchronous motor for aircraft and submarine application

Objectif

Objectives and content
The manufacturing industry, has a need for the
development of new procedures for optimisation of the
production process. The project concept is to
investigate ways by which the current time consuming
process improvement loop of simulate-evaluate-modify may
be replaced by computational schemes which will complete
this task automatically and will identify the global (as
opposed to local) optimum for the process-part
combination. The project will adopt the success enjoyed
in structural optimisation as a starting point and
investigate its application to manufacturing processes.
The forming processes used to research the concept will
be powder forming by initial compaction and also the
filling of permanent dies with particular reference to
pressure and gravity die casting. These have been chosen
due to their generic nature in that the work completed in
powder forming will have wider application in other
forming processes such as forging and the die filling
work will have ramifications for plastic injection
moulding techniques.
The schedule for this work has been divided into four
components. The first focuses on the quantitative
definition Of- criteria for optimisation. This will also
need to capture process constraints and documenting the
precision of industrial data will comprise a major input
from the industrial partners in this project. The second
component will require some development of best practice
analysis procedures for simulating the manufacturing
processes and this will use existing schemes which have
already been extensively researched by the pertinent team
members.
The third component and main focus of the project will be
to investigate the application of gradient schemes in the
optimisation of the manufacturing processes. This will
address the different ways in which optimisation
objectives and constraints may be expressed in a
computational framework. This will involve initially,
the investigation of gradient criteria that represent the
objective functions and constraints that have been
identified for process optimisation. This will be
followed by integrating these with optimisation shells
such as these contained in DOT. The research will also
address fundamental work on optimisation algorithms and
schemes. such as the updated reference technique. which
will be investigated in this research programme. The
fourth component of the project will focus on a
demonstration of optimisation for appropriate industrial
case studies.
The successful completion of this fundamental research
programme will have direct benefit to the industrial
partners in the project initially by the development of
best practice algorithms. However. this research into
optimisation methods has long term benefit in the
automated optimisation of process design and operation
for all manufacturing processes. The project represents
one of the first attempts to apply optimisation
procedures to the area of manufacturing processes. Its
successful demonstration will pave the way for future
developments in this area of computer simulation.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
