Virtual reality environment for the simulation of critical industrial processes involving human intervention

Objetivo



Objectives and content The industrial objectives of VIRTUE project are:
- the reduction of physical prototypes necessary for the verification of the product and processes design, and thus reduction of time-to-market and total product costs;
- the improvement of the manual process performance in terms of feasibility, cycle time and cost, and;
- the improvement of efficiency and safety, and reduction of costs for training tasks.

In order to achieve these goals the project aims to develop Virtual Reality based methods and tools that will support:
1. The design of assembly and maintenance processes involving human intervention. The system will enable: -the direct verification of process qualitative characteristics, like feasibility and operator effort, and; - the accurate estimation of values for quantitative characteristics concerning human performance in complex manual tasks like, the cycle times;
2. The training of human operators for assembly and maintenance processes. The system will enable off-line training within a virtual environment that provides: - near real working conditions, and - real time instructional tools. The project's output is expected to lead to: - Product costs reduction by approximately 2-5%, due to the reduction of late design changes costs related to human intervention. Reduction of time for pilot assembly line testing by approximately 20-25%, due to the potential to model and verify manual processes in a realistic and accurate way from the early design changes. Reduction of training costs by up to 25%, due to the potential to reduce costly training tasks performed under real working conditions. Improvement of personnel safety, due to the fact that human operators will be enabled to get familiar with the process performance in a safe virtual environment. The consortium consists of three industrial partners / End Users who design and manufacture complex products, an IT Vendor with expertise in the development of VR systems that are used world wide, and two research partners, namely a University and a Research Institute well experienced and equipped for industrial VR applications. The Scientific and Technological objectives of the Industrial and Materials Technologies Programme addressed by the proposal lie within: Area 1 (Production Technologies) and specifically Sub-Areas 1.1 (Incorporation of new technologies into production systems) and 1.5 (Human and organisational factors within production systems) and Area 2 (Materials and Technologies for Product Innovation) and specifically Sub-Area 2.2 (New methodologies for product design and manufacture).
