Resultado final

A petroleum-refining residue has been selected for the production of petroleum pitch with low content in carcinogenic poly-aromatic hydrocarbons, sulphur and ashes, in comparison with traditional coal tar pitches. An adequate route has been identified for the production of such a pitch and proper scaling-up has been completed leading to the production of petroleum pitch at industrial scale with appropriate characteristics for the refractory industry. Petroleum pitch reduces drastically carcinogenic potential in carbon-bonded refractories in comparison with coal tar pitch and alleviates the decreasing disposability of coal tar pitch. A great rate of petroleum pitches for different purposes can be produced modifying the pitch process parameters. Other industries could benefit from this new pitch by adapting its process. Aluminium-making industry or steel-making industry is potential beneficiaries of this product. Repsol is currently developing an agreement with a Spanish pitch factory for the production and marketing of this product. Coal tar pitch is currently used for different industries. Anodes for the aluminium industry, electrodes for electric-arc steel-making industry or carbon bonded refractory products include coal tar pitch in their composition. Petroleum pitch can properly substitute coal tar pitch decreasing environmental, and human health risks.
A petroleum-refining residue has been selected for the production of petroleum pitch with low content in carcinogenic polyaromatic hydrocarbons, sulphur and ashes, in comparison with traditional coal tar pitches. An adequate route has been identified for the production of such a pitch with characteristics that are suitable for carbon fibre elaboration. The main properties consist of low mesophase content (less than 5% w/w) and high softening point (greater than 230º C). Further processing developed by the University of Alicante consists of spinning, stabilisation and carbonisation. Beginning with the petroleum pitch produced by Repsol, and following the process developed by the University of Alicante, carbon fibres and activated carbon fibres can be elaborated with the same characteristics than commercial products. Carbon fibre is a high modulus material that shows high stability and excellent electrical and thermal conductivity. These characteristics made this product suitable for portable power, automotive and construction industries. Activated carbon fibre is a high modulus material that shows high stability and high adsorption capacity. These characteristics made this product suitable for pollution control devices, gas-adsorption masks and clothing, and gas storage.
