Training Industry in Neutron Strain Scanning

Objective

The complete understanding of the stresses within manufactured components and structures remains an unsolved, but important goal of engineers and metallurgists. Such an understanding would lead to stronger, lighter, longer-lasting and cheaper components. It would also enable critical decisions relating to the safe use of components or structures to be made with greater certainty. The measurement of strain (and hence stress) deep within materials has recently taken a significant step forward with the construction and development (under Brite/EuRam II - PREMIS - project no. 5129 ) of ENGIN, a dedicated pulsed neutron strain scanning (PNSS) instrument at the ISIS facility in the UK. The proposed Thematic Network plans to stimulate technological innovation through the incorporation of this new technology into industry. The Network will also promote technological co-operation and integration between European industry, research laboratories and universities in this important area of research. The Thematic Network will have three aims: to train industrial members of the network in the technique of neutron strain-scanning to co-ordinate the European research in this area and to assist in the creation of neutron strain measurement standards to publicise the technique to a wider industrial base.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
