Thematic network advanced manufacturing systems

Objectif

TEAMS
PROJECT OVERVIEW

It is of vital importance for all European manufacturing
industries to have access to a strong manufacturing industries. The parallel and complementary development of final products and their means of fabrication (e.g. car of tomorrow -
manufacturing unit) are the key issues of transsectorial
concurrent engineering.
It will not be possible to substantially increase levels of
employment and consolidate the revival in growth in the Union unless they are based on efficient, innovatory industry
operating within an effective regulatory framework combined
with a more labour-intensive development model. Steps must be taken to ensure that European Union remains an attractive site for production and investment, including investment from
outside the Union. The TEAMS network allows, in relation to the IMT-programme to join the efforts in labour intensive
sectors and to initiate innovations in order to maintain
European manufacturing industries competitive. The 'real time' exchange of information on technological aspects of related
projects will lead to much better R&D co-ordiantion and
establish itself a network of very strategic importance. The included projects will increase the future exploitation of
results and will be motivated to reach the settled targets due to the links to other similar and parallel conducted projects. The efficiency of the IMT-program will increase through
deliverables on time and cost. It can be expected that the
scope of special activities and projects will be widened
towards a more global technological solution for the concerned area.

EUROPEAN DIMENSION AND PARTNERSHIP

The European machine tool sector consists of a large majority of small and medium sized enterprises. In front of
international competition, the technological leadership of
European industry is still a key element for a strong market position. The business environment in terms of production
cost, quality and organisation is of course the fundamental
basis for the actual companies' situation and market shares
but, due to the fundamental technical orientation of a product like a machine tool, the continuous improvement of the
technical solutions oriented towards the user's requirements and market conditions are most important for the individual
company's future. This network brings a lot of added value in this regard.
Most of all European mechanical or electronic industries
strongly depend on highly sophisticated manufacturing systems in the form of machine tools. No product, car, airplane,
machinery and consumer electronics or whatever is manufactured without machine tools.

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS

The TEAMS Network includes the following 3 clusters :
* innovative applications of manufacturing systems
* new machining systems and subsystem integration
* industrial manufacturing process innovation

The exchange of data, which might be specific technology
related, between the projects in one cluster but also over
borders of one cluster will be the benefit for all projects. Benchmarking and analysis of the achievements of individual
projects will be much easier.
Additionally, a strengthening of the consideration of end user requirements is also expected. The exchange inside a cluster and inside the network will generate a large number of contacts towards end users, which will surely help to give more market orientation to the different individual projects.

Finally, the network itself might generate contacts
respectively business relations for further co-operations
between various partners.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
