Improved methodological and technical approach to external hazards safety issues in the aerospace industry

Objectif



The industry would benefit from improvements related to external hazards working methods and scientific knowledge: understanding the different phenomena, possessing the adequate models, mastering the optimisation of protection measures, integrating the external hazards protection measures to the overall product development and exploitation cycle... all these are fields where improvements are possible and necessary to remain competitive, cut design, manufacturing and exploitation costs while ensuring or improving safety.The work planned in this thematic network covers three aspects of these issues: * Optimise sharing and enhancement of knowledge through the increased effectiveness of those projects sharing common roots and goals. * Analyze working methods, interactions between specifications / design / certification / production / exploitation and regulations. It is also possible to analyse methods used in each of those fields, such as methods employed to reach certification. * Analyze scientific and technical commonality, links and overlaps between external hazards issues and projects. From both a methodologic and scientific point of view it would be interesting in particular to look at the two following topics: * Analyzing gap between scientific state of art and current regulations. *Comparing protection vs detection vs prediction strategies. In pursuing these goals scientific and technical exchanges between specialists of different institutes and companies will be enhanced: The creation of the EXT-HAZ thematic network will bring together people working on the four areas mentioned above. These people can be divided into two categories: - aircraft manufacturers, with needs in improving the safety of their products or reducing the costs by using optimised protection. These aims can be achieved by getting a better knowledge of the threats and improving detection methods. - academic people (universities, research centres and meteorological centres) who know the state of the art on atmospheric physics and meteorological predictions.The creation of the EXT-HAZ thematic network would encourage communication: * between industrial people. Practical benefits could be expected from this communication for instance: - as aircraft are often struck by lightning during icing certification campaigns, it would be interesting to acquire data on lightning as icing campaigns are performed. - there may be some use in comparing methods which are used to detect storm clouds (weather radar), wind shear (Doppler radar) and wake vortex (laser detection in MFLAME). This may lead to optimised non-redundant detection methods. * between academic people, by easing scientific exchange of knowledge. * between industrial and academic people. It is expected that, by joining together, industrial people would define common research needs which would be proposed to academic people. The creation of the EXT-HAZ thematic network may therefore be useful in guiding basic research towards aeronautical needs.
