Objective
The aim of this project is to develop a new production technology for plastic injection moulds, based on a rapid prototyping technique called selective laser sintering. Sintering metal powder with the aid of a computer controlled laserbeam enables the elimination of several conventional machining operations, so that the production time and therefore manufacturing costs of injection moulds will be reduced drastically. A further advantage of the use of computerized scanning technique is the minimization of limitations in design, so that it will be possible to make more and more complex moulds. As a result of this an important leap can be built up compared to the conventional mould manufacturing. For the sintering of metallic materials several processing parameters will have to be investigated and charted, for example the composition of the sinter alloy, operating temperature, conditions of the atmosphere. Also mechanical properties such as porosity, compressibility, shrinkage, wear-resistance, changes in structure of materials, etc. will be part of the research program. Several fields of knowledge will be used for this research project, among other things laser technology, powder metallurgy, control software, and injection moulding technology.
