Objectif Knife wear and unreliable cutting systems cause a substantial loss in the production of polyethylene and polypropylene foil all over Europe due to rejects, machine downtime, low quality rolls and reduced production rate. This project aims at - the development of improved wear resistant knives by using ceramics, coated metals or hard metal and by optimisation of the knife blade shape; - the development of improved knife holder systems: this includes a holder design allowing a) knife replacement without damaging the knife and b) precise positioning of the knife. Knife and holder should be available at an affordable cost such that the introduction threshold in industry be as low as possible. From such an improved cutting system a drastic reduction of losses will result. Additionally, improved knives will double production rates for some types of foils.
