Objective
Chromated zinc coatings are widely used to provide corrosion resistance to construction parts in the building, automotive, offshore and chemical industry. The corrosion resistance, partly achieved by the chromate post-treatment, is the most important property; in some cases however also (self) lubricating properties (fasteners) are important. The objective of this project is to develop and demonstrate a novel electroplating process and mechanical plating process which gives good corrosion resistance, combined with self-lubricating properties using a composite coating based on a metal (matrix) of zinc (alloy) and a non toxic second phase of organic (fluoro-organic and/or a polyamid (silicate) phase which does not contain hexavalent chromium.
