NeW LONG FIBRE REINFORCED THERMOFORMED SHEET PRODUCTS USING RECYCLED MATERIALS, AND A TOTAL SYSTEMS APPROACH

Objectif

The plastics industry in Europe is experiencing strong pressures to recycle materials for reuse. In particular the packaging industry has a 20% recycle target by the year 2000. Present recycle volumes are well short of this figure in European countries with the exception of Germany where recycling legislation has been in force for some time. Besides collection and washing, two specific problems inhibiting efficient re-use of thermoplastic polymers are (1) Sorting into polymer type, and (2) Loss of properties in the recycle process. The objective of the present project is to reduce or bypass these two problems by harnessing new fibre composite and blending technologies to the recycle objective. While the project will be specifically aimed at novel thermoformable sheet products, which is the market the two proposers serve, it is expected that the technology will be applicable to other product forms serving the automotive, leisure, packaging, domestic and engineering sectors. The project will explore the use of new long-fibre composite and blend technology which is being developed by the RTD perforrners. This holds promise of giving cost effective improvement of strength and stiffness largely independently of the specific grade or type of polymer thus relieving both problems (1) and (2). While the project will establish the technological platform for these ideas, work will be required subsequently by all the eventual participants to turn them into actual marketable products. The project will therefore also establish the ground rules for successful product design using the new materials. This will be done by considering the total system of market requirements, manufacturing economics and recyclate sources. /The plastics industry in Europe is experiencing strong pressures to recycle materials for reuse. Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
