Objective Coating failure by debonding during service is essentially a fatigue failure process and there is an urgent-need for a method of testing for the industrial quality assurance of coatings where impact is experienced. Accordingly, the RTD objectives of the proposed programme are: 1) to develop an automatic impact testing machine for the evaluation of coating systems under various impact conditions at a range of temperatures experienced by impact forming tools; 2) to investigate the response of a variety of coatings systems to impact wear and thus correlate the structures and properties of the coating, interface and substrate wit such impact wear conditions as frequency, force, time, temperature and indenter geometry; 3) to simulate, model and develop software packages for the service behaviour of coating systems under application conditions involving impact and vibrational wear.
