Development of foundry production control systems for ferrous and non-ferrous castings

Objetivo

Metal castings are made for a wide range of applications and to many different types and specifications (ferritic and austenitic steels, irons and non-ferrous metals and alloys) . Whilst some are supplied to specific compositional ranges, most are used in applications where mechanical or other properties are required. Chemical analysis is widely used to provide production control yet few correlations exist to relate product chemical analysis with the properties obtained in the castings. The few that exist have been prepared by individual companies and do not have widespread application. Providing broader based relationships that are reliable would enable better production control and improved product verification methodologies to be used. The project aims are to develop a broad range of correlations and will involve the statistical analysis of a large volume of data drawn from both production and laboratory tests. The reliability of production chemical analysis is an essential prerequisite to the development and application of correlatiom equations. For this reason, the exploratory project will evaluate the reliability of chemical analyses performed by manufacturers as a forerunner to the main project. A store of samples will be established to enable reliability studies to be continued after the completion of this project. Benefits accruing to the participants will include the availability of correlations and statistical data that will enable the characteristics of metal castings to be predicted and monitored. The availability of such data will enhance existing production control methods; minimise waste and improve product reliability.

Programa(s)
