Development of a new generation of work clothing: establishment of a design tool to test clothing for extreme work environment

Exploitable results

The project aimed to develop a design tool which allowed the development of specialized work clothing of superior quality in a timely and cost efficient manner, based on the knowledge of the existing protective clothing used in the oil industry. The objective was to develop a protective system rated 10% better than the existing systems on an overall basis. The planning and execution of the activities performed were to a large extent based upon the EN-prestandard: "Personal protective equipment - ergonomic principles - part 4: thermal characteristics - requirements and test methods". A test protocol was defined (environment conditions, exercise cycle, measurements, subjective evaluation of thermal sensation and garment design). Altogether 6 clothing ensembles were tested (with and without lining, different underwear). Results clearly showed that a considerable improvement was achieved concerning both the thermal properties and the garment design.
