Rapid design system for the footwear industry

Objectif

This project proposes to design and produce a pre-production design development data base to improve the speed and efficiency in bringing a new shoe design into production and hence to the market place. By providing an easy to use 'design by adaptation' capability, the system should encourage our designers to develop more integrated and rationalised design concepts. This should reduce part counts, maximise the returns from previous investments in tools and operator training, and improve production efficiency. The system will also hold approved production quality control measures for various combinations of materials and/or shoe constructions to allow automatic generation of the necessary instructions. This will assist companies win quality accreditation and improve competitiveness. The system will be developed for use by people with little previous experience of computers. It it will be adaptable so that new component and construction categories may be accommodated as they evolve with fashion. This will ensure that the software will be configurable for a range of individual company needs. The information held by the design development data base system will be separate but compatible with other computer applications in use. This provides for holding prototype design details for materials and components which need not exist in the production systems until the style is approved for bulk production. For companies in supply partnerships which produce designs commissioned by retailers, the system will be suitable to use as an interactive catalogue to aid negotiations.
