Objective
The European tanners are competing with manufacturers all over the world by producing value added products, one such product is water-resistant and oil-resistant leather. While many products and processes are available due to its importance, there are still many problems such as inconsistency, high cost of the treatments, finishing of treated leather and environmental implications of some treatment systems. The major tasks of the proposed project will be: improving existing systems, developing finishing methods for water-resistant and oil-resistant leather and developing environmental friendlier application technique. Following assessing current treatment systems by using a selected/developed evaluating method, the processing systems/chemicals will be optimised to improve efficiency by 30 % and reduce process related inconsistency by 60 %. Through the studies of properties of leather surface and finishing systems by modern techniques, in combination with practical trials, a guideline on finishing water-resistant and oil-resistant leather will be produced in terms of surface properties of leather, resin types, particle sizes, surface/fluid properties of finish systems, and etc. Supercritical fluid of CO2 method will be used to apply water-resistant and oil-resistant treatments. This method will produce solvent style performance without any VOC emission. Thus it is a much more environmental friendlier technique.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
