New composite powders for powder coating with more attractive appearance and improved functional performance

Objective

Powder coating is a lower cost, more environmentally friendly finishing process than conventional wet paint systems. However, its wider uptake is impeded by the more limited range of surface finishes and textures that can be achieved. It is also difficult to produce thin coatings which are desirable to reduce costs further and to improve dimensional tolerances. The proposed work will develop a new type of composite powder for electrostatic spraying which enables higher levels of various decorative and functional fillers to be incorporated. The system should also facilitate thinner coatings and enhance the performance of protective finishes.
