Objective
In the plastics processing industry, simulation software is increasingly used for product design and production preparation. Today's simulation tools are mainly concerned with the calculation of injection, holding pressure and cooling phases. As for simulations of shrinkage and warpage, strongly demanded by the industry, no reliable results are to be expected, especially for partially crystalline materials. For recycling reasons, partially crystalline materials (e. g. PP) are increasingly used, particularly in the automotive industry. However, the quality of the plastic components regarding their shrinkage and warpage cannot be calculated with the existing tools. Thus the scrap rate is still extremely high in spite of previous simulations of shrinkage and warpage behavior. It is the aim of this project to develop more complex simulation paramaters for the calculation of shrinkage and warpage behavior of amorphous and, in patricular, partially crystalline materials. It is meant to enable the disigners to see "weaknesses"of their components as early as in the product design phase and thus being able to optimize the design for the production process. The result of the research project is to determine material data by means of clearly defined measuring devices and methods, so that shrinkage and warpage of plastic parts can be calculated in advance. Furthermore, different calculation models which mathematically describe the material behavior, will be tested according to their applicability. With these results, a maximum agreement of computability. With these results, a maximum agreement of computability and practice shall be achieved. Therefore, these results must be integrated in the simulation software by the software developers. Substantial cost savings due to smaller scrap rates, less aftertreatment and a better material selection can be expected.
