Hard coatings for wood cutting

Objetivo

The industrial objective of the proposed research is to improve the performance and reliability of tools for cutting wood and wood-based materials by developing advanced coatings for HSS and carbide tools. Coatings will be developed by the transfer of knowledge of recent progress on hard coatings in the metal working industries to the wood working industry. The transfer of knowledge will be based on a careful analysis of the special conditions occurring during wood working compared to metal working. It is anticipated that both tool life and productivity will increase, and that coated tools will be cost effective compared to presently used tools. The technical objective is to develop and test a methodology for producing advanced surface engineered tools that are much more robust than diamond tools, and at a lower level of production costs. The research will comprise analysis of wear mechanisms, optimisation of coating properties, eg. by combination of surface engineering processes, and optimisation of cutting conditions and tool geometries for coated tools.
