Develop a low cost, positioning and rotating device

Objetivo

Develop a low cost positioning and rotating device When processing in the fish and food industries large quantities of goods are transported in the factories on conveyor belts. The problems arise when the goods must change direction with exact measures for example to a robot or a machine process. Then the stateof-the-art is to use an expensive and complex electromechanic system. The high cost decreases the use and instead much lifting, turning and sinking movements are done manually. These manual movements in the fish and food industries are often done in chilled rooms or in rooms with low temperature. The low temperature in combination with lifting and turning movements cause a large number of injuries on shoulders, necks and arms. The proposers in this project cooperate in order to develop a new type of low cost, positioning and rotating device which will fulfil the demands of the fish and food industries. The objective is to develop a device - based on a patent of the prime proposer from 1995, see appendix land 3 - which will only cost 1/5 of a electromechanic system with equivalent functions. As the device is of a simple design and requests a minimum of maintenance the mentioned low cost is both a low sales price as a low life-time cost. The overall objective of this research project is to increase the knowledge in this field and solve the technical problems, which impede this developing project. The main problems to solve are - the rotation is not quite smooth, caused by to high retardation and acceleration, when the rotation starts and stops. - the rotation can reverse if a counter force is applied, when the cylinder is in the top or in the bottom position. - how to transmit pressurised air through a swivel with endless movements. The approach to meet the objectives is to commission the performer group to solve the problems through RTD in optimising of structures, stress/strain, designing cam curves, simulations, engineering processing models, genetic algorithms, mechanics and cooperate with the proposers by bench marking and testings of the innovations steps. Time table: RTD project - 13 months. Exploitation of the results and developing of the product - 6 + 2 months. Experts calculate the market to be around 100 000 device systems a year in 2000. The proposer calculate to sell the first year - 1999 - about 3 000 devices. As the companies in the core group are small companies the developed device will be patented and the group will grant licences at a large extent. This new product will start a new epoch in handling goods which have to change a direction combined with, lifting or sinking moment. It can be used in most sectors - multisectoral. It will also to a great extent improve social conditions through less working injuries as this low cost device will replace many hard working moments. This new technique will be valuable to a great number of SMEs, therefore the results will be disseminated to other SMEs, through articles in newspapers and via IRCs, branch organizations, Focal Points and Internet.
