Objectif
The industrial objective of this project is to develop a stiffened extrusion process to provide the SMEs with an effficient, cost-effective manufacturing process for continuous profiles, giving improved properties and greater design flexibility than existing products. Increased performance levels are predicted to yield a 20% reduction in costs over metallic products and 500% increase in performance compared to conventional extrusion. The technology for the production of these profiles is a combination of thermoplastic extrusion and pultrusion technologies. The critical elements of these processes are available, and the approach to the development will be to build on the work that has been carried out at Pera in the UK. The process will be significantly enhanced and expanded, through the innovative application of materials, process and tooling technology to meet the specific, application led demands of the SME partners. The proposed work will enable the development of stiffened extrusion for window, ciadding and general purpose applications, giving products with higher performance levels at equivalent or lower cost to those currently available. The technical objectives of the proposal relate to: Innovative development of a method of producing continuous fibre reinforced extruded product, with a high standard of finish, to realise a 500% increase in stiffness over conventional extrusion. Introduction of novel die technology to ailow the impregnation of the reinforcement fibres with thermoplastic polymer. Enhancement of the developed process to ensure long-term stability of the process conditions and high quality continuous production. Application of stiffened extrusion through design and process innovato product shapes which are specific to the demands of the SME proposers. These will be achieved by building on basic technology, extending the process and product performance through an innovative step in manufacturing development. The effect of this development on the core group of SMEs will be to significantly increase their markets in the supply of continuous profiles, equipment and materials, depending on their position in the supply chain.
