An innovative, Computerized, Cost-effective robust, real-time, remote condition Monitoring System for ship-diesel-engine maintenance

Objetivo

The main goal of COMOS is to develop an innovative solution for today's main problems concerning the maintenance of ship diesel engines. A feasibility study shows that condition monitoring of ship diesel engines will strengthen the competitiveness of the project proposers in an interesting market sector, the fishing industry (20,000 engines world-wide). The proposed solution will also be applicable to other industries (100,000 engines world-wide). Currently, unexpected failures of ship-diesel-engines can cause the following problems: Decrease of safety; Increase of energy consumption; Contaminated shiploads due to stagnation; Lack of income due to stagnation; Decrease of the engines life span; Environment risks. To adress these current problems the project objective is to realise a cost effective, robust, real-time, remote and a predictive Condition Monitoring System (CMS) for ship diesel engines using innovative knowledge based systems, neural networks and communication systems for trend following and predictions considering the engine-condition and to generate related and necessary early maintenance guidelines for ship operators. This system will increase the life span of a diesel engine from 20 to 26 years (30% increase) and will reduce the preventive maintenance costs from 35,000 ECU/year to +/- 20,000 ECU per engine (43%). Further reduction in costs per engine through this system are expected: maintenance after calamity form +/- 15,000 ECU/ year to +/- 5,000 ECU (67%); Decrease of the standstill situation (from 20,000 ECU/year to 5,000 ECU year, decrease 75%); decrease of inspection costs (from +/- 7,500 ECU/year to +/- 3,750 ECU/year, 50%). To realise these objectives 7 main workpackage will be carried out: functional and technical specifications in WP1; experimentally testing the performance of the C-sensor to measure the cylinder pressure as function of the combustion cycle (WP2); develop computational intelligence methods in on-board systems to detect abnormalities in these measurements(f.i. Neural Networks) in WP3; develop computational intelligence methods in land-site system (Artificial Intellingence technology) to link the measurements to the overall condition of the engine, in WP4; to integrate results of previous wps in prototypes of the on-board CMS and central service CMS in WP5 and to test and validate them in WP6; WP 7 is to develop an exploitation plan to guarantee a smooth transition of the commercialisation phase. All partners have interest in the exploitation of COMOS, as each will benefit from COMOS by direct deliverance of their sub-part of the total COMOS-CMS system. Main responsible for exploitation will be Delta Maintenance and DEI, as maintenance and condition monitoring is their core business. The different technologies that will be developed, will also be exploited separately, because of the generic character of those technologies (neural networks, knowledge based systems, tele- and satellite communication equipment combined with engine-technology).
