Promising initial test results have shown that the angular impact testing configuration can provide data on the adhesion strength of the coating-substrate interface in shear. This information may be more valuable than that from conventional methods such as scratch testing. Impact testing with direct pendulum oscillation allows direct quantification of the energy transferred to the sample during impact. There is the potential to measure the energy involved in adhesive failure of a coating-substrate interface directly. Direct quantification of coating adhesion will allow coatings producers to select process conditions to optimise coating adhesion for improved and more reproducible coating performance. The development of the two techniques described in this result, angular impact testing and the direct pendulum impact test will provide valuable additional information to that currently available from the prototype impact testing instruments described in result 1.Promising initial test results have shown that the angular impact testing technique can provide data on the adhesion strength of the coating-substrate interface in shear. This is particularly useful for testing extremely hard coatings. Film failure is detected from abrupt changes in probe position when the contact energy becomes absorbed. In the direct pendulum oscillation impact test elastic waves are generated from behind the test sample such that energy is transferred across the probe-sample contact area. For a non-energy absorbing contact enough energy is transferred to cause pendulum recoil followed by an impact when the probe returns to the sample surface. This technique allows direct quantification of the energy transferred to the sample during impact.
