Beltsaw blades qualities improvement thanks to a new tungsten carbide coating sprayed by hvof thermal projection technique

Objective

The aim of our approach is the development of a new tungsten carbide coating, when applied thanks to HVOF (High Velocity Oxygen Fuel) process on the cutting edge of blades, will improve the useful lifetime of the tool. Our work will consist in: - research of the carbide composition, - research of the best HVOF parameters, - design of the coating process, - defining the best use criteria for the treated blade, - can-ying out industrial tests in sawmills. Belt saw blades are used today: - without coatings against wear on the teeth, - with a stellite coating. In spite of the improvement contributed by stellite protection, the deterioration time of the cutting edge, and the re-grinding of the blade, remains a penalising factor for the sawmill profession. This situation generates: - a loss in quality of sawn-up items, resulting in an abnormal volume of sawdust and wood loss due to poor shaping of planks (this could represent up to 3,5% of the raw material costs), - a loss in production as a result of reduction in cutting speeds and stock, as well as machine stoppages, - a considerable intervention costs, associated with various operations of blade repair (regrinding, flattening or stellite protection), and even purchase of new blades. The economic gains that the new approach will allow are the following: -Origin-Economic gain -Saw dust reduction -1% of raw material cost -Wasted ends reduction-2 5% of raw material cost , -Productivity increase-5% -Saw blades maintenance costs decrease 20% Results of this study could be applied to various wood machining tools. This project is included in Brite Euram Areas. The subject covered by the proposal is Area 2: 2.1.1 S that is
Manufacturing, processing and recycling technologies at reduced cost for equal or increased functionality of existing engineering materials (e.g. steels, non ferrous metals, concrete, polymers, ceramics, timber and composites) and high added-value products
. Three other areas are covered by the proposal: 1. l .7 M, 2.1 .3.S and l .2.3.S.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
