A coates spherical rotary valve combustion engine design to replace camshafts and poppet valves

Objectif

Work undertaken to date on a spherical rotary valve system for Internal Combustion Engines by the inventor Mr G Coates and by Nicholson McLaren Engines Ltd, has indicated that the concept does indeed offer a viable alternative to the traditional valve assemblies (involving poppet valves, springs, tappets etc). However, a number of significant problems have been identified. These need to be solved before fully engineered designs can be produced. Certain areas also require considerable development. More specifically, new materials need to be identified and/or developed for use in the production of bearings, seals and thermal barrier technology for the spherical valve design. When complete, the above research and development will be built into modern European 2.0 Litre engines to prove the successful operation of the mechanism and to demonstrate the distinct advantages of rotary valves over conventional poppet valves. The expected benefits are: * Lower emissions (with an aim to significantly improve on the requirements laid down in 1988). * Improved fuel economy. * Lower idling speeds, thereby using less fuel in urban situations and again producing fewer emissions. * Reduced manufacturing, assembly and maintenance costs. * Extended practical life of components and engine lubricants. * Substantially reduced power requirement from the crankshaft for driving of valve gear. * Opportunities for smaller overall engine design and resultant reduced vehicle drag factor . The prototype engine(s) will be tested for durability and emissions and endorsed with recogr.used certification. The approach will consist of the following stages: 1 Design & draughting of prototype components. 2 Dynanuc computer modelling for vibrations and thermal characteristics. 3 Development of prototype components and new materials (for valves and bearings) by partners with support from several respected academic establishments. 4 Development of a new Engine Management System. 5 Assembly & dynamometer testing of prototype engine(s). 6 Preliminary emissions testing. 7 Installation of prototype engine(s) into test vehicle(s). 8 Endurance trials. 9 Final emissions testing & certification of prototype engine(s). The results of the dynamic modelling procedures along with the practical steps outlined above should be combined to produce a unified computer-based design methodology. This will allow detailed geometric data to be generated for all required components together with a prediction of the actual performance to be expected. The methodology could then be linked to CAD/CAM systems to parametrically aid the manufacture of an entire family of valve trains. For the longer term (2 years onward) - armed with this powerfol generic modelling tool - it is intended that Cylinder Heads fitted with spherical rotary valves be developed for mass production. Initially, these are to be aimed at the commercial road vehicle market (passenger cars), for both new and used (ie: 'retro-fit' application) engines.

Programme(s)
