Objectif
The actual outcome of the project is the following
- a prototypical realisation of the frame in aluminium as a replacement for the standard frame
- a completed construction of a magnesium frame as an alternative for the aluminium frame (CAD-data are available)
- a prototypical realisation of a sound amplification system on basis of Hambucker pick-up's
- a prototypical realisation of the action, which is put together by standardised single parts. These single parts are made out of magnesium and can be manufactured by the die casting process (mass production process)
- data, describing the influence of the used materials (frame, action) and different amplification systems on the sound characteristics of the piano. These data can be used for a further development of the concept and for further applications for the developed technology.
This proposal is prepared with the help of an Exploratory Award which included a Research Feasibility Study. The branch of Europe's manufactures of classic pianos consists of SME's exclusively and they are rather traditionally orientated enterprises. The production of these musical instruments is determined mainly by handicraft. These companies and their suppliers have to compete on one hand with products industrial made in the far east in great numbers by large groups. On the other hand the market is going to be submerged with electronic instruments mainly also produced in tiger states. The characteristic and main shortcoming of the electronic instruments is the artificial generation of the tone. The way of playing can not be compared to classical instruments. The comprehensive history of European music was nevertheless written for classical instruments. The chance of European producer of pianos to overcome this jeopardy lies in a concentration on their specific knowledge. A piano produced with the use of innovative technologies but still a classical instrument. This new concept is determined by the following objectives: Decreasing of production costs Increasing of the flexibility Light weight and climatic independently working instrument For the success of this concept a close co operation and a fair exchange of specific know-how between the handicraft dominated SME and high skilled RTD performers is required with respect to the industrial application and conditions.
