New methodology for rubber and cork recycling to produce footwear insocks

Objective

In EU, rubber industry for footwear applications produces annually about 1,500,000 tons of solid wastes which are mainly disposed underground. Since this solutioni) implies wasting all the contained resources,ii) has associated high management and land occupation costs, iii) usually raises the opposition of the nearby populations, represents a serious environmental and economic problem for the rubber and footwear industries. Cork industry is very important specially in the South of Europe. Portugal alone produces more than 50% of the world's cork production, which is used to produce bottle stoppers and compositions of cork. The production of these originates great quantities of solid wastes, in the form of high and low diameter particles. The first are actually completely reused. However for the second, normally refereed as dust, no high value application has been identified, and nowadays are only used in the cork factories as combustible for boilers, being very excedentaries. The goal of this research project is to contribute to the competitiveness of these industries by achieving the following industrial objectives: - Development of a new rubber/cork material for footwear insocks, incorporating at least 30% of these wastes; - Create a sustainable development alternative by economical and environmental correct management of the referred residues; - Introducing a new process for insocks design and production taking in consideration comfort parameters, and obtaining the patent for subsequent commercialisation; - Contributing to the overall increase of comfort in footwear which is the major decision factor for consumers selecting a new pair of shoes, in Europe, giving European footwear and related industries an additional competitive factor.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
