Exploitable results

The goal of this research project was to contribute to the competitiveness of rubber for footwear applications and footwear industries by achieving the following industrial objectives: -Development of a new rubber/cork material for footwear in-socks, incorporating rubber and cork wastes. -Introducing a new process for in-socks design and production taking into consideration physiological parameters. -Create a sustainable development alternative by economical and environmental correct management of rubber and cork residues and contribute to the overall increase of comfort in footwear which is the major decision factor for consumers selecting a new pair of shoes, in Europe, giving European footwear and related industries an additional competitive factor. Globally the project developed as planned; the achievements can be summarised as follows: -It was possible to introduce in the rubber formulations up to 50% of residues, including rubber and cork wastes, obtaining a material with adequate physical properties for the proposed application. -A software tool to design and mechanise physiological or anatomical in-sock moulds was developed successfully. -A database incorporating physiological data was developed. -Prototype moulds, in-socks and footwear were developed, produced and tested at laboratory and wear trials with very satisfactory results.
