Development and testing of new surface treatment processes for magnesium alloys

Objectif

Magnesium alloys increasingly will replace different materials e.g. iron, aluminum or titan in the future. They are being used in a broad variety of structural applications, i.e. automotive, computer parts, cameras, handtools, aerospace, communications, optical industries etc., not only for weight saving reasons but also due to good castability and machinability. The supplier industries, especially SME anodiser and SME painting shops for magnesium need innovative surface treatment procedures to provide wear resistance, corrosion resistance, adhesive and decorative surfaces. Ecological and environmental aspects shall also be regarded. The SME's and ROR's in the project endeavour basically two ways to achieve the mentioned properties. The first route is the technical modifying of the classical anodising process itself, that means, removal of considerable disadvantages in this process by developing a new anodising procedure. The manufacture of anodic oxide layers for magnesium alloys in industrial bulk production, especially for SME's, has still to be worked out. Existing processes are only applicable for the manufacture of single parts. For this reason, an appropriate anodisation procedure has to be worked out for certain applications. The second route is the organic coating (painting) on magnesium by testing polymers mainly for the substitution of toxic chromate and heavy metals in the pre treatment process. A better corrosion protection shall also be achieved by this new method. Further a new organic coating procedure, based on paintings containing polymerdispersions, shall be worked out and tested on Mg alloys. The industrial objectives in the project are: Novel surface treatment methods with regard to environmental aspects -Modifying and Development of a suitable, cost effective magnesium anodisation process for mass produced articles by removing the disadvantages in this process (mainly automotive parts) - New painting procedures by application of polymers for decorative and better corrosion resistant magnesium alloys. - Elimination of environmentally unfriendly pre treatment and post treatment processes (e.g. chromating) The technical objectives in the project are: Development of improved anodising procedures, Applicability of polymers for general painting processes -Development and optimation of anodising electrolytes for magnesium mass production -Improvement of the reliability of the anodising process for magnesium alloys -Development of adhesive, corrosion resistant, hard and wear resistent Mg oxide layers -Applicability of a novel corrosion protective pre treatment process by testing polymer conversion layers as primer before the subsequent painting process, especially powder -paintings. -Testing the suitability of polymers as additives in wet paints for serious corrosion protection, especially-filiformcorrosion, further testing the technological properties of the coatings -Suitability of pure polymer dispersions for subsequent impregnation steps of magnesium alloys and anodised Mg layers. The successful development of new processes for the surface treatment of Mg alloys especially modifying electrolytes for anodising and corrosion protection for painting requires the combination of expertise in electrochemistry and painting technology. In this respect, the present consortium (7 industrial partners, 2 research institutes) is highly qualified and well balanced and provides optimal starting conditions for a successful completion of the project objectives. The major benefit of the project will be that European SME companies (mainly companies supplying the automotive industries and industries acting in other specific fields) will have the opportunity to participate in the ever expanding world market of Magnesium material, at present dominated by US. The areas covered by the project are: 1.1 2.2 3B.2 3B.4

Programme(s)
