Objective
The objective of the project is to develop a lid for jars, pots and other sorts of glass containers which traditionally employ plastic or metal lids. The i ndustrial objectives are to produce a lid which combine the utilities of hermet ic and air-tight closure as well as easy handling and opening for consumers by improved performance and increased functionality. Development of a new lid will combine the properties of both plastic and metal lids, thus assuring the funct ions of an ergonomic easy opening for all consumers together with a hermetic ai r-tight closure after opening. The packaging concept will be applied for jars c ontaining all kind of food articles, spices with strong odours, pet-food, etc.
Technical objectives comprise engineering design tools and materials welding to construct a lid moulded in plastic with a steel spring which comply fully w ith industrial requirements and consumers demand for functional products. When the lid is to be opened, two flaps are pressed radially inwards by means of whi ch the locking ring is disfigured locally, and the low pressure is eased. The l id is fixed on the container again by pressing it onto the brim of the containe r. It should be assured that the lid will not loose the grip if the container i s carried by the lid. Additional environmental objectives are to improve ac tivities towards increased recycling and collection of glass containers as the lid will be composed of recyclable materials. As part of the workprogramme rese arch into application of adequate biodegradable plastic components will be carr ied out. The approach to meet the above mentioned objectives comprise: De finition of requirements phase. The lid should be heat-resistant, hygienic with out harmful emissions to the content and should meet adequate requirements and standards defined by the food industry, consumers and from industrial designers . Research and development phase, with focus on laboratory tests of the pack aging system, in terms of durability of food articles tested with the new lid.
Tests for functionality, durability of the packaging solution and performanc e under transport from factory to final consumers will be carried out. Tests , demonstration and modifications, including extensive tests of the prototypes in an industrial environment and with consumers panels. Demonstration activitie s as well as dissemination of results will take place.
