Development of spiral heat exchanger/condenser

Objetivo



In food and pharmaceutical industries spiralheatexchangers t condensers in the following called spiral have been used during many years for heatexchanging and condensing purposes when there is a need of favourable relations between heat transfer area and total volume see App no I. The spiral, with its benefits of long thermal length, compact small size, combination of a high flow and large heat transfer area, is especially suitable for sensitive products as e g flavourings, fragrances and proteins. :In t'ood industries it is used e. g. to condense water vapour at pasteurisation of milk and in pharmaceutical industries it is used when you condense solvents. The main problems with existing techniques to produce spirals are that it is not possible to increase the working pressure from 7 bar to 20 36 bar as it then leaks or breaks off \Vith a spiral of this low cost type which can withstand a working pressure of 36 bar the potential would be very large. The need for new techniques of heatexchanging / condensing have increased considerably as: treons are/will be prohibited in one way or another. energy has become more expensive. the requirements of the authorities have been stricter in t`ood and pharmaceutical processing. better use of energy due to less environmental impact The core group of this project is developing a low cost spiral, which will be able to withstand a pressure of 36 bar. J'hereby the group will innovate a product, which will in many applications fulfl the above mentioned needs. The new product is based on the same principles as existing spirals with a working pressure of 7 bar. However, in the developing work has arisen some technical problems regarding welding and rolling of the ductplates' which impede the development. This RTD project is started to increase the knowledge in spiral heatexchanging and to solve the technical problems how to weld I roll the ductplates. The main objectives are: to develop a method to weld plates which are to be rolled to ducts to develop a method to roll the ducts into a spiral with quite even distances between the ducts The approach to meet the objectives is to commission the performer group to solve the problems through RTD in joining and welding methods, research in alloys, material rolling techniques, stresslstrain, simulation modelling, mechanics and co operate with the proposers by bench marking and tests of the innovations steps. Time table: RTD project 21 months. Exploitation of the results and developing of the product, 6 + 3 months. Experts calculate the market to be around 10 000 spirals from the year 2002. The core group will produce and sell the spirals. They will also grant licences when the spiral is patented. This new product will start a new epoch in heatexchanging resulting in a considerable improvement of the effciency. It will also improve environment through replacing freons in certain industrial applications. The new welding and rolling techniques can be used in many sectors mostly by SMEs in all EC countries and thereby very valuable to a great number of SMEs. The RTD results will be dissemblated to other SMEs, through articles in newspapers and via IRCs, branch organisations, Focal Points and Internet.
