Objective
The composites are new materials, and they suffer from a lack of knowledge on their material properties and processing characteristics. Often, the developers and the engineers prefer to choose classic materials like the steel or the aluminum because they know their specifications, unlike the composites. Composites materials are very useful, thanks to their lightness and their resistance, but it's difficult now to manufacture a good composite component part without several costly empirical tests. The SME cannot afford these costly tests, and often don't use these very useful materials. If the engineers could have the same knowledge as the classic materials for the composites, these last ones would be more used for the manufacturing of high quality component parts. The market for composite products has been predicted to grow considerably over the next few years. The composite market in Europe was in 1994 at 450.000 tons, and its expansion rate was 10%. The European market represents 50% of the worldwide market which is around 900.000 tons each years. As we can see, this market is a large one, and its expansion is high. Due to the increasing need for a composite characteristics database it is essential that a new system for this industry should be developed as the market expands. The purpose of our project is to create a knowledge based tools incorporating data on material properties and processing characteristics and aimed in particular at facilitating the reliable and cost effective application of new materials into innovative products. With this database on the characteristics of the composites, associated with a calculation software, the SME should be able to develop composite component parts like any other materials, for the same development cost. With this tool, the European SME will be more competitive. The main innovation of this project should be the forecast by the calculation which will be established and validated by the test of the composites behavior toward the static request, the shrinkage, the fatigue and the polymerization. The composite optimization will allow to decrease the raw material consumption used for the manufacturing of component parts. The results of this project will bring the safe utilization of new ranges of composites which begin to appear on the market and which are easily recyclable.
