Thermolytic Recovery of Cu and Precious Metals from Electronic Circuit Boards and Cu -'laminas', in a Fluidized Bed Reactor

Objetivo

The principle objective of this project is the development of a technology, which will be friendly to the environment and capable for the efficient retrieval of copper (Cu) and other precious metals (Au, Ag, Pd). These metals are embedded in a variety of scrap composite materials, such as composite copper laminas and old or used Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). The proposed recycling technology is based upon thermo physical principles, focused on the separation of organic mater from copper or from the embedded precious metals and from . The separation and the recovery of copper can be achieved via a thermolytic process which is applied on pre processed pieces of scrap, utilising a multistage fluidized bed reactor technology. In case of using as raw material laminas the process retreives small pieces of copper (Cu 99,9%). In case of recycling PCBs the process retrieves agglomerates consisting of copper and other precious metals. In the first case the recycled product (copper) is fed directly to the market, in the last case agglomerate mater, should be post processed (electrochemicaly) in order to separate the copper from the other precious metals. The effluent gases will be treated by CaCO3 in order to absorb the produced Cl2 (5 10% w.w.) during the multistage fluidisation process. In case of excess of effluent gases, they will be further treated in order to avoid any undesired environmental effects and to achieve the overall process compliance with the EEC environmental regulations. Thousand of tons of composite scrap matter is produced every year by industries who manufacture copper laminas, electrical and electronics products, world wide. Up today no radical solution has been established capable of recycling efficiently this type of scrap materials. As a result, the main solution currently adopted is the dumping of this scrap into landfills. At the same time stringent EEC environmental regulations make this problem more acute to the involved industrials concerns who produce this type of scrap. The proposed recycling technology, will be of great importance primary for those industries producing composite laminas and printed circuit boards PCBs. The scrap material produced from laminas is estimated 8% to 10% of the total production. Approximately 30% of the content of this scrap, apart from precious metals, is metallic copper which can effectively be recovered. Furthermore, the remaining of the scrap i.e.paper fibreglass, inert materials etc. can be selectively separated and recycled. The involved SME's partners, intend by the end of the project to be engaged in the commercialisation of the proposed FBR technology. So it is expected that the proposed technology will be adopted world wide. This exploitation prospect will offer significant benefits to the European Union as well as to the SME's located in the EU, since it will initiate a new business and a number of new employment opportunities, while solving at the same time a thorny environmental problem. The research, design and development expertise available for this project by the involved R&D performers and the industrial experience of the participating SME's, will ensure high quality results and a successful project outcome.
