Development of re-usable medical textile products - 'laminates'- with signigicantly improved resistance against washing-drying-sterilization processes

Objectif

The project aims at developing innovative re usable medical textiles (tri laminates) for use in operational theatres, in particular surgical drapes and gowns. Increasing hygienic and medical safety standards, economic constraints in health system budgets, legislation restrictions and increasing costs for waste disposal will push the use of re usable medical textiles on a European scale. According to the results of the Exploratory Award phase, execution of the project is technically feasible, highly desirable and justified due to the interesting market perspectives expected in the medium term especially for SME, the transnational nature of the partnership necessary to succeed in the targeted heterogeneous European market and the expected positive impacts of the new materials to resolve a number of critical issues in medical surgery in a combined effort (medical safety, economical, ecological dimension). The target of the research work is the maximum number of washing drying sterilization (WDS) cycles that has to be achieved in the product life cycle, while keeping all safety standards. The targeted number should be in the range between 60 and 100 cycles. Durability and reliability of the materials and products will determine their acceptance. The proposed work programme comprises the following tasks: Analysis of materials and processes relevant to the products, detailed specification of the R&D work, pilot production (lamination, confection), application in clinical enviroment (re use, repair, handling, momitoring), extensive measurement and testing programme (mechanical, physical, chemical, safety properties), and a technology and market watch.
