Objective
Flowmeters for pneumatic conveyors and oilfield pipelines will be designed by Process Tomography Ltd (UK) and Fluenta a/s (Norway) who have the following research objectives A Solids Flow in Dense Phase Pneumatic Transport 1. Apply electrical capacitance tomography to measure the solids concentration profile 2. Measure the velocity profile by cross correlation B Oilfield Pipelines 1. Apply Electrical capacitance tomography to determine the flow regime 2. Use the flow regime information to improve the accuracy of an existing oil/gas/water flow meter when used in highly disturbed flows 3. Incorporate a flow regime independent multibeam gamma densitometer using a very low strength source, for gas content measurement 4. Incorporate a new capacitance tomography technique combined with an existing inductive technique to measure the water fraction over a 0-95% range C Both Instruments Incorporate and evaluate state of the art reconstruction algorithms, which are being developed in other programmes. This will overcome the electrical field distortion of the previous generation capacitance sensor. It will enable the flow regime independence to be maintained in the face of wide variations in the electrical properties of the conveyed materials.
The result will be new instrumentation for:
1. Solids flow measurement and control (transport at minimal energy cost and minimum breakage);
2. Flow regime independent oil/gas/water component flow measurement (especially important for exploiting marginal oilfields).

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
