Pressure Sensor Packaging for Hostile Environments

Objectif

The main technical objective of the SME partners is to develop new, low cost, high performance pressure sensor suitable for operation in hostile environments. The sensors will be based on state of the art but commercially available micromachined silicon capacitive pressure sensor die. In this project new die packaging, assembly and calibration techniques will be developed and applied in technology demonstrators to produce sensor prototypes for evaluation by the project partners. The target prototype packaged sensor are: - A low cost packaged high pressure sensor (1500 bar) capable of operating at high temperature (250 øC). - A low cost packaged high pressure sensor (400 bar) capable of operating at high temperatures (up to 500øC). - A low cost packaged pressure sensor for corrosive environments The core group SMEs have identified the generic technology of micromachined silicon capacitive pressure sensing,as using able to meet their exacting performance requirements and their cost constraints. By the use of innovatie packaging techniques to exploit the capability of micromachined capacitive pressure sensor die, new packaged sen prototypes will be produced to operate across a range of extreme environments. The economic objectives are to exploit such pressure sensors in a range of systems applications based on the core SME's key market knowledge. The consortium comprises a group of SMEs from across Europe (Italy, Finland, Scotland and Germany) who will cover the market areas of marine technology, petrochemicals, industrial process control, semiconductor manufacturing and instrumentation. An 'other proposer' a Spanish SME, part owned by a major European automotive company (Daimler Benz), has been added to the project to allow the large volume automotive market to be addressed. The consortium also wishes to penetrate new markets, increase manufacturing flexibility and introduce new product features and miniaturisation. The social objective is to apply these sensors in systems for the benefit the members of the European Community Typical applications would be in vehicle emission control systems resulting in reduced pollution and automated control systems resulting in increased operator safety and reduction of repetitive tasks. The SMEs wish to take on board automated manufacturing systems for sensor production leading to improved working conditions. Increased market growth will lead to requirements for new, highly trained, skilled employees to undertake manufacture and design of the high technology sensors. Increased use of computer based calibration and linearisation techniques will increase the requirement for IT skilled employees. The consortium also wishes to reduce the use of dangerous materials in their product (e.g. Mercury) as well as reduce raw material usage by miniaturisation. There is significant risk in this approach given fierce and fact moving product innovation from the US and Pacific Rim countries particularly bearing in mind the harsh environments in which the sensors must operate. These risks, while high, are well defined and it is believe the project will provide major benefits for the European sensor's industry as well as in the wide diversity of products and systems (e.g. car) which require pressure sensors in harsh environments.

Programme(s)
