The main achievements of the project are development of a simplified ink transfer system which eliminates need for an intricately engraved very expensive anilox roller; development of new ink formulations compatible with the spray nozzles; a treatment process for printing forms greatly facilitating cleaning; and process for coating printed materials using the ink spray system.
The benefits include substantial reduction of solvent emissions due to a shorter ink transfer path, significant cost reduction of flexoprinting presses by elimination of the anilox roller, reduced operating costs by shorter set-up times and reduced ink and solvent consumption, and improved working conditions in printing shops as a result of an enclosed ink transfer system.
In addition to the environmental and social impacts mentioned above, the new system can considerably improve European competitiveness in the flexoprinting industry by reduced investment and operating costs. A further impact could result from use of the system for coating printed materials not only flexoprinting, but also offset. Many shops at present have this operation performed in outside shops or at subcontractors, incurring considerable additional cost in handling and transport. The new system could be attached to classic printing presses in the shop where the printing is done, thus permitting integrated in-line coating.
