Reduction of machine-tool vibrations

Objetivo

1. An exhaustive study of the vibrations in machine tools, control strategies (including algorithms), sensors and actuators available in the market has been performed. As a result, a procedure for dynamic characterisation of the machines has been established joining the experience of the partners and the study of methods applied by another institutions and centres. This procedure has already been applied to the project machines in order to identify their vibration problems.
A very practical handbook for machine-tool low vibration design and use is being written by the research partners joining state of the art, project experiences, previous experiences, etc. A draft text is available for the partners now and they intend to publish it if possible.
2. Vibration level has been appreciably reduced for each of the project machines
- Different design changes have been proposed to improve dynamic performances of some of the analysed machines. Most of them have already been carried out and some of the introduced successfully in serial production.
- A different vibration control systems has been developed, built, fitted, implemented and tested for each machine. As a result, vibration levels have been greatly reduced and machine performances have been appreciably improved.
A new generation of vibration sensor has been developed during the project by BCD and a new company is being created to exploit this result.
Main objective will be vibration reduction in three machine tools (a thread grinding machine and two milling machines, one of them a HSC machine able for roughing and finishing) by means of different techniques of vibration control (active and passive damping of vibrations, and adaptive control techniques). In order to achieve the final goal of the project is needed to evaluate the feasibility of different technical methods, trying to find the most appropriate for each particular application. Actually it is foreseen to apply one of the three following methods: - Active control of vibrations will be done using an additional actuator which applies dynamic forces (electrodynamic actuator) or displacements (piezo or magnetostrictive actuators). - Passive control of vibrations has been demonstrated in previous Brite/Euram project as a successful method for vibration reduction, specially when dynamic behaviour of the system does not vary strongly during machining. Passive control is obtained by means of a dynamic absorber working in closed loop. - Previous experiments (i.e. HIQU project) demonstrated that the machine tools have working conditions, working areas, feeds and spindle rotation speeds, which are less influenced by vibrations. They are like vibration free zones . This fact lead to the identification and realisation of a very simple and effective adaptive control which will aim at the selection of the most suitable working parameters for the particular job.
