Deliverables

The TIE tool is meant to allow non LCA experts to perform their own LCA (=Lifecycle assessment). With this it lowers the barrier for many SMEs to use LCA. The tool uses Scripts. These present themselves as a series of questions to the non expert user. With the answers, the non expert enters a description of the product and the lifecycle into the tool. The tool itself will combine all these data with its own LCA database and with the appropriate methodological rules, to calculate an LCA result. Scripts can be programmed by LCA experts. They can ensure that the relevant data is available and that the methodological rules needed for LCA are applied in a correct manner without bothering the user with these rules. The system works best if groups of SMEs work together to collect data and to have scripts developed. key issue in the dissemination is to involve consultants or other RTD providers to set up projects for SMEs, as SMEs will only use the tool if those partners have set up the correct database and scripts. SimaPro 5.0 is a commercially available Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool, used by over 600 (usually very large) companies and universities worldwide. With this it can be considered as the market leader in this area. It can be used to assess the environmental load of products over the life cycle, see also: http://www.pre.nlA unique feature is the ability to program Scripts. In the previous version (before the TIE project) A Script presents itself as a series of questions and answers, that guides the inexperienced user through the process of an LCA for a product. These scripts can be programmed by more experienced LCA experts. This initial version worked, but had some important limitations: 1) Scripts were very difficult to programme. 2) Each time a user wanted to change only one parameter, it had to go through all the questions. 3) The user interface was not so transparent. In the TIE project these limitations have been solved. For instance, once a script is run a "Form" is generated that gives an overview of all the data that has been entered. The user can now change data in any order, and get the required result very quickly. In fact it means the user gets a series of special user interfaces (Forms) for specific environmental issues. As indicated, the Scripts are intended for non experienced LCA users, as can be found among many SMEs
