Machining of very hard materials for tool and die manufacturing

Objectif

Actually at mid-term of the project, the development of the hard milling technology for the finishing of molds have been achieved according to the objectives of the project. Based on the partners' input a geometry was designed which could be machined successfully for one material. The process reliability for the roughing and pre-finishing of hardened steel with a hardness above 54 HRC up to 64 HRC is limited due to insufficient performance of the cutting tools and not adapted machining strategies in state of the art CAM systems. New cutting tools with small diameters were developed to machine special features of the test geometry.
Machining of hardened steel has experienced a considerable growth potential over the past years. It poses a competitive alternative to EDM, that is characterized by the need of electrode design and manufacturing, and removal of the heat affected zone. This process chain still accounts for most of the long and costly manufacturing cycles in tool and die shops. It could be shortened significantly in many cases by using milling instead of EDM. The CRAFT-project Machining of very hard materials in tool and die manufacturing is designed to substantially enhance the performance of these milling processes through focused development of applicable hard machining technology. An increased usage of milling versus EDM on selected geometries and materials will result in higher productivity and lower manufacturing costs. It will increase the competitiveness of the participating European enterprizes in their field of business. The enterprizes are representing machine tool builders, tool manufacturers and tool and die makers from Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Spain and Portugal. All companies have a vital interest in the advancement of hard machining technology, and will contribute to the program with their specialized know-how in this field. The objectives of this project have been put together by all members of the consortium. They form the guideline for the work program, which is following the need to develop solutions that are feasible and that can be implemented. The quantified objectives are defined by a : . a desired time cutting area for finishing of at least 2 cm2 per minute; . a minimum surface quality requirement of Rz = 5 m, and . cut down in mold production time by eliminating at least 50%.of all EDM processes. The program is characterized by an intensive cooperation plan between the individual partner companies. While partners will be dedicated to the scope of work in their specific field of expertise, advances will be communicated within the consortium on a regular, frequent basis. The research institutes, IPT and CETAP, will contribute with their experience on past projects to efficiently conduct the development and research, and direct the work towards an applicable result. The results that have been jointly developed, will help Modigs AB to improve the design of their machines, and will supply the tool and die shops with process technology. Combined with other existing technologies and equipment, the technological advances can be implemented. These system solutions will be geared to the individual company's profile, and allow an integration into their own equipment investment plans and personnel training schedules. The research project proposed here complies with the funding guidelines of the EC and focuses on Item 1.1 .1.S.

Programme(s)
