Salmon skin tanning

Objetivo

This proposal is prepared with the help of an Exploratory Award, which included a Research Feasibility Study. This project addressed a concept of new materials for the leather sector. Annually, (only in Spain) are wasted more than 300 Tons of salmon skin, as a result of the transformation process of this kind of fish, for the human consumption. In the other hand, the high scale of the leather goods finds that: - The raw material is limited with a high and unstable price, because of the fact that a main percentage has to be imported from not European Union's country. - Some leather is obtained from animals protected or in extinction risk. The salmon skin properly pickled, could be used as a raw material for some scales of leather goods, just like other reptile skins, as the crocodile or the snake. There exists similar products made with other fish's skin, but salmon skin has better attributes to be used as raw material, like: - The size of the salmon piece of skin is bigger and thicker and its flexibility is excellent - Salmon skin is easily obtained because it grows up into fishfactories and its destination is food industry. Furthermore, they use normalised fish pieces and consequently, they are able to supply to the leather industry a product with specific characteristics. Other fish don't use to be transformed by industry, so it's more difficult to recover its skin as raw material. Leather sector shows an increasing demand in raw materials, most of them imported with unstable prices from non European countries due, among others, to the drop of slaughtering in EU. The objectives are: - To improve the pickle method of the salmon skin, adapted to the peculiarities of this raw material, in order to obtain a product with the characteristics that market demands. - To take advantage of the salmon skin wasted at present. - To introduce this new raw material as substitute product in high scales of the leather industries.
