Objetivo
A 1995 survey showed that the EU disposes of more than 300,000 tonnes of chrome leather waste every year. This typically contains 3% elemental chromium, which makes the disposal of the waste in landfill doubly undesirable. This innovative project will build on established know how, and develop new methods of recycling the waste thereby recovering both fibre and chromium. The chromium will be returned to the tanning industry. The fibre will be used as an additive in the manufacture of high density boards used in shoe production, stationery, toys and packaging. This integrated recycling concept will be demonstrated through the establishment of pilot plant. The outputs of the project have the potential to save the EU every year: . 30O,000 tonnes of landfill capacity; 60MECU in landfill costs, with a potential for increase to 160MECU; fibre worth 24MECU in the board industry; chromium worth 24MECU in tanning. The partnership involves 10 SME's in 4 countries. The core group is well placed to exploit the new technology, while the presence of a company belonging to major board making and packaging groups in the consortium will assist in its wide acceptance.
