Low cost location monitoring system for freight-containers using GPS technology

Objectif

At present freight transportation's companies have very few (on none) information on how their deliveries are going on, so that there is very high indetermination about dispatching times. Hitches such as an immobilised or out of route container can easily pass without noticed for a long interval. Companies would be able to schedule in a very precise way their deliveries if they could know precisely where the containers are, at any time. Furthermore they could re plan transport operations, as they go along, when setbacks as the aforementioned occur. The objective is to develop an innovative low cost monitoring system to exactly locate all freight containers, including stacking containers, within a GIS based cartography using GPS. The system would comprise a central unit receiving all positions signals coming from each individual container displaying them onto a detailed digital chart, and a set of GPS receivers/signal transmitters devices, one for each container. They will be very simple, small, compact, integrated devices of easily assembly and low cost. The power unit would be a longlasting battery. Energy supply will be guaranteed by reducing consumption because the devices will be energised only when a transmission is required from the control centre (and this operation last a few seconds). A low cost real time monitoring system like this would permit SME's (with low budget and low access to new technologies), by means of optimising delivery schedules and fast managing of possible contingencies, to work to dispatching deadlines and reduce costs coming from delays and non efficient routing management. Therefore competitiveness will be highly increased. An innovative, low cost global positioning system (GPS) receiver will be develped and the fully integrated GPS unit must employ the latest digital signal processing technology alongside a radio architecture. In addition to providing the power for GPS signal acquisition, data extraction and position calculation, the processor will have adequate additional capacity to allow user specific customization. Functions such as map displays, route finding, position reporting or monitoring, differential GPS and modem integration are added to the core GPS functionality. The device will have many applications where a system function (ie reporting, alarm, switching, data logging, etc) is required to be related to accurate positional information. The proposed system has the following advantages over existing similar technologies: it is of proven innovative design with low parts count and very low cost; it comprises a fully integrated GPS solution with reserve processing capability (central unit) and it can be used with stacking containers.

Programme(s)
