Objetivo
The original main aim of the project was as follows :
- to establish the use of the solar heating system, which had been developed by Energy Resources Ltd., with developers who build multi-house projects.
The secondary aims were as follows :
- To show that this solar heating system is in fact a low energy heating system which gives high levels of affordable comfort and clean filtered air.
- To show developers that the system is reliable and does not represent any significant risk to them over a conventional heating system.
The general reaction from users of the Kollectaire system is excellent. The main benefit which clients often comment upon, apart from the economics of the system, is the overall feeling of freshness of the air within the house. This is very important as some designs of low energy houses reduce the level of air changes but fail to supply a sufficient level of fresh air ventilation. With the Kollectaire system we maintain approximately two fresh air changes per hour when the solar heating system is operational and one fresh air change per hour when the house is simply ventilating.
It is important to note that there is a heat recovery ventilation unit built into the system and very importantly that the solar collector is used to reduce the energy penalty of the ventilation system - this is achieved by allowing the collector to accept air 'on' at 17°C and air 'off' at 20°C. This means that in dull weather the collector is supplying energy to the house to maintain a zero energy penalty for high levels of ventilation.
It is of further significance that the absolute humidity level can be maintained at less than 7mg of water per kg of dry air for many of the winter months with the Kollectaire system - this is mainly because of the reasonably high levels of fresh air ventilation that is maintained. It is noted by the World Health Organisation that when the ambient humidity in a home is less than this figure then dust mites do not tend to propagate. Examples of other benefits often cited by clients include: the enhanced warmth in all rooms of the house; the advantage of the heated attic now being part of the home; the reduced noise-level inside the house due to the utilisation of solid walls and floor all over the house; the fact that the system does not use radiators makes for less maintenance and easier decorating.
The overall reaction from the construction community has also been extremely positive and they have been very impressed by the package offered.
The initial system was a solar assisted which was designed to be installed in reasonably insulated houses. It was known as the TRISOL system. Essentially the system was designed to run 24 hours per day in the Autumn, Winter and Spring. The idea of using the heat pump meant that the single glazed air solar collectors continued to feed energy to the evaporator even during dull weather and at night- in effect the solar collectors were acting as a secondary evaporator for the heat pump.
Four of these systems were installed and studied. It was noted that there were difficulties in marketing heat pump systems. It was decided to redesign the system to provide more power to cater for intermittent operation of the heating system and to examine the methods used for building and insulating houses in order that we could further reduce the costs of space heating and domestic hot water.
These design changes resulted in a revolutionary package being offered to the Irish housebuilding industry with unique benefits to the home owner.
The new system design is called the Kollectaire System. It is a simple solar air heating system which features full heat recovery ventilation. It is specifically designed to be installed in a well insulated house which has a high degree of thermal capacity. The design of this well insulated concrete block house was jointly undertaken by personnel from Energy Resources Ltd. and Roadstone Dublin Ltd.- a wholly owned subsidiary of the CHR Group. The package which is a combination of this well insulated house and the Kollectaire solar heating and ventilating system is now called the SafeWarm Home. It is being marketed by CHR plc.
The major benefits of the Kollectaire system are as follows :
High level of comfort for low cost; the ability to use all of the house throughout the Winter period; high levels of fresh air ventilation at virtually no energy penalty; no radiators cluttering wall space; reduced levels of dust mites; pollen filters; less CO2 . of large house. Larger fans will also be used to deliver higher volumes of air. It is intended to monitor these systems not only from the energy usage viewpoint but also from the User and Developer viewpoints.
