RATIONAL USE OF ENERGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF STUTTGART BUILDING ENVIRONMENT

Objetivo

The objective is to activate the energy saving potential in large complexes of different buildings. This will be done in three steps :
1.) Development of building operation and fault detection system (BOFD)
2.) Installation of an energy load distribution centre.
3.) Installation of energy management systems for each building.
The concept for the whole Pfaffenwald Campus of the University of Stuggart will include all customers and producers of heat, cold or electricity. The load distribution centre will coordinate different demands to avoid unnecessary peaks, organises the heat recovery and support users in the management of their individual buildings. The goal is to demonstrate that it is worth to develop an overall concept including a load distribution centre, to gain experiences in how this should be organised and propose ways for operation.
Despite of low energy prices due to cogeneration and the "kameralistische" principle optimisations were done with third means. The installed Energy Management System (EMS) is in operation.
The University Campus at the Pfaffenwald is an assembly of loosely coupled buildings with different user profiles, specific user responsibilities and building equipment. The energy demand is varying widely. Therefore optimisation of the operation of these buildings requires a concept, its realisation by a building operation and fault detection system and its validation by model analysis of the data measurement in the buildings. It will provide central facilities for model based analysis of operation data, fault detection and reduction of high demands. This problem will be attached as follows. The first step will be an evaluation of the present situation. Next we will determine the saving potential for each building. Then the costs for saving measures are estimated. As a result an individual break even point will be determined and measures are taken. In parallel the energy load distribution centre will be installed. Then step by step all the buildings will be equipped with a localenergy management system and connected to the energy load distribution centre. From this point, an engineer can help to control the connected buildings and find out irregular energy demands in the Campus. The following new ideas will be experimented :
1.) Minimising peak demands by developing a campus concept, which integrates substantially different users.
2.) Minimising energy requirements by coordinating the user behaviour through the load distribution centre.
3.) Reuse of locally available waste heat by heat recovery. The project will open a tremendous new market and help to secure working places and reduce environmental pollution in a cost neutral way by simply replacing energy through intelligence. The savings are not a matter of new hardware, but results of better energy concepts. The results can be used in conjunction of similar organisations, like other universities, research centres and technology parks.

Programa(s)
