Reduction of solar radiation by manmade aerosol and thus modified clouds in Europe

Changes in solar radiation in the Baltic region
A rather large decrease (14%) in solar radiation has been observed in Estonia over the last four decades. This reduction is explained by a decrease in transperancy of the clear sky and possibly by an increase in low clouds. The decrease in transparency must be due to an increase in reflective aerosol. However, the radiation trend is based on annually averaged values and a more detailed analysis is needed to relate radiation reduction and anthropogenic aerosol. This will be done by taking hourly radiation values over the measuring period of 37 years and classify then according to wind direction.
Northerly clean artic flow will serve as conservative tracer, that is we make the assumption that the transparency in this background air stayed the same over the years. With south-east winds the trend in transparency then must reflect the trend in anthropogenic aerosol burden over the East-European continent. This trend analysis will be complementary to the radiation trend analysis performed in the main project for other parts of Europe.
In a similar way radiation data from other stations in the Baltic area will be evaluated, thus offering a more general view of the trend in this region.
