Development of polarisation diversity and doppler radar data analysis for qualitative and quantitative precipitation monitoring in severe weather

Objective

Research and operational development in Western Europe has concentrated on Doppler and polarisation-diversity techniques as a means of supplementing the conventional reflectivity data measured by standard weather radars. Knowledge of reflectivity values at one frequency is insufficient to determine whether a particular severe storm seament contains hail, or just rain. It is the latter which presents the possibility of serious flooding. In Eastern Europe the technique has been to develop the measurement of reelectivity at two frequencies (the dual-Wavelength technique). This proposal seeks to add to the project a number of partners in E.Europe where severe storms occur. The benefits should be a cross-fertilisation of ideas between East and West, and an expanded database which should provide a basis for future assessment of the relative merits of the various techniques.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
